An Intrathecal Drug Delivery System (IDDS) is a programmable pump that delivers small amounts of pain-relieving medicine directly into the fluid surrounding the spinal cord, very close to where pain signals are processed.
IDDS may be helpful in Cancer pain, Failed Back Surgery Syndrome (FBSS), Refractory nerve pain, or disabling muscle stiffness (Dystonia) that has not improved with other treatments.
After the success of a trial of injection, a thin tube is inserted and positioned near the spinal cord and connected to a pump placed beneath the skin of the abdomen under general anesthesia.
