Toning Down the Chronic Pain with Neurostimulation
Spinal cord neurostimulation treats nerve pain that has not improved with other care.
It may benefit people with persistent back or leg pain after spine surgery [Failed Back Surgery Syndrome (FBSS) aka Persistent Spinal Pain Syndrome (PSPS)], Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS), painful diabetic neuropathy, or other nerve-related pain.
A small device sends electrical signals near the spinal cord, interrupting pain messages before they reach the brain.
Treatment begins with a temporary trial: thin leads are placed through a needle under image guidance and connected to an external controller. If pain relief and activity improve, a battery is implanted beneath the skin.
The procedure is minimally invasive and does not involve operating directly on the spinal cord.
Many patients experience less pain, better sleep and improved mobility, although results vary. Most return home the day after, gradually resuming normal activities over weeks.
Ask your pain specialist whether a spinal cord stimulation trial could help you reclaim comfort, confidence and independence.
